Summary. The article explores the possibilities of integrating the principles of sustainable development into conceptual design through contemporary design practices and a project-management approach. It is substantiated that under the conditions of global transformations contemporary design transcends the traditional design of isolated objects and is increasingly interpreted as an interdisciplinary activity aimed at shaping systems of interaction between humans, technologies, and the environment. Conceptual design is identified as a key stage in the integration of sustainability principles, since it is at this stage that the semantic, functional, social, ecological, and communicative logic of a future design solution is formed.
The article aims to theoretically substantiate the possibilities of integrating the principles of sustainable development into conceptual design through contemporary design practices and a project-management approach.
Methods. The methodological framework of the study combines analytical, project-oriented, and case-study approaches. The analytical approach is applied to interpret contemporary design practices in the context of sustainable development; the project-oriented approach is used to determine the logic of integrating sustainability principles into conceptual design; and the case-study approach is employed to demonstrate the practical implementation of the proposed framework. The research methods include comparative analysis of contemporary design practices, systematization of sustainable design approaches, managerial audit of project decisions, and integrative evaluation of the correspondence between conceptual solutions and sustainability principles.
Results. The article characterizes contemporary design practices oriented toward sustainable development, including eco-art, critical design, speculative design, social design, participatory design, circular design, and regenerative design. Their potential is identified in developing critical thinking, social responsibility, and alternative future scenarios through visual communication and conceptual design. A project-management approach is proposed as a way of organizing conceptual design in which sustainability principles are integrated into all stages of project activity, including context analysis, idea generation, concept selection, visualization, presentation, and evaluation. The study identifies managerial mechanisms for integrating sustainability principles, such as sustainability criteria formulation, resource management, and monitoring the compliance of design decisions with sustainability goals. The article also analyzes the case of the All-Ukrainian Motivational Poster Competition for International Design Day “BE CREATIVE” as an example of integrating sustainability principles into educational design practice.
Originality. The study develops a theoretical interpretation of the project-management approach as a mechanism for integrating sustainability principles into conceptual design. The article expands the understanding of contemporary design practices by considering them not only as artistic and communicative strategies but also as instruments for shaping critical, ethical, and socially responsible design thinking in higher design education. A conceptual model of integrating contemporary design practices into the development of motivational posters is proposed.
Conclusion. The integration of sustainability principles into conceptual design requires the combination of contemporary design practices with a project-management logic that ensures the consistency, controllability, and evaluability of design decisions. Educational project formats contribute to the formation of critical and systemic thinking, social responsibility, and readiness of future designers to operate in conditions of uncertainty and global transformations. Prospects for further research include the development of methods for evaluating the influence of design on social and ecological value orientations, the study of the role of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in the development of sustainability-oriented design practices.
