Abstract

Summary. The article deals with the issues concerning the acquisition of syntactic units in the training of future English teachers. It has been stated that mastery of written language implies the ability to combine linguistic units of all language levels within the syntactic level and to realize the ways of their connection. The authors establish the dependence of competent proficiency in English at the first (bachelors) level on the application of skills of correct combining and operating syntactic units in the process of forming written statements. It has been found that in the context of modern foreign language education, scientific works are devoted to the specification of the phenomenon of “syntax”, the definition of syntactic units and typical mistakes made in teaching English grammar. At the same time, the number of works dealing with the areas of concern related to learning syntactic units in the training of future English teachers is rather limited. The paper actualizes the importance of acquiring key syntactic units (word, phrase, construction, clause, sentence, text) in written speech within a university course, which involves correct phrasing, logical sentence building withintranslation activity; writing scientific or creative works; business correspondence; creating presentations, and preparing international projects. The article analyzes and summarizes the difficulties faced by higher education students in the selection of syntactic units for designing syntactic relations: the construction of complex sentences of various types, the use of punctuation in complex syntactic structures, the order of words in clauses, the use of fragments instead of a complete sentence, the agreement of the subject and the predicate, the choice of the verb tense form.
