Abstract

A modern university should provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills. Among the basic skills of a contemporary specialist, we consider the ability to communicate in a foreign language at a professional level. The ability to communicate on professional topics is difficult for foreign language teachers to solve using various modern teaching methods and practices. Among them, it is worth noting the process of projects and cases, which have recently been gaining more and more popularity worldwide and in Ukraine.

The purpose of the article is to determine the effectiveness of the case and project methods in learning a professional foreign language.

Project-based learning is not only a form of cooperative learning, but also its implementation widely uses the principles of a communicative approach to learning. The project method is not limited to communication between students. It also provides for searching, analyzing, and systematizing information necessary to implement the project. The project method consists of a joint group search, analysis, and systematization of the information required to solve the task or problem the teacher sets by creating an appropriate project.

The case method is also widely used in foreign language learning. A case is an event or situation that occurred in real life and was solved by relevant specialists; a vital nuance here is that this event or situation can be used in the educational process when training future specialists.

It was also decided to investigate students' feedback regarding using the method of projects and cases in teaching the subject "Foreign language for professional direction." We consider these two methods in an organic symbiosis, each of which has a clear role but leads to a typical result. We defined the project method as explaining new material and the case method as controlling it. Using these two methods in combination, students acquire the necessary knowledge of a professional foreign language (learn professional terms, communicate, and make a presentation in a foreign language) and acquire and improve essential social-communicative skills or so-called soft skills. Projects and cases are an important and effective method of acquiring and enhancing professional foreign language communicative competence. These methods improve students' professional speaking skills and develop necessary social and communicative skills or Soft Skills.
