Summary. The current state of academic success of middle school students in physical education lessons has been analyzed in the context of the reform of the general secondary education system in Ukraine. The significance and priority of the competency-based approach as a methodological basis for assessing learning outcomes in the subject area of «Physical Education» have been established.
The main approaches and methods of evaluating students' academic achievements before and during the implementation of the New Ukrainian School (NUS) reform have been identified, ensuring a comprehensive and differentiated analysis of students' physical fitness, taking into account modern educational challenges.
Key tasks and directions for the development of the subject «Physical Education» under the conditions of the NUS have been highlighted, aimed at forming basic physical competencies and increasing motivation for a healthy lifestyle. The necessity to adapt assessment procedures to the conditions of distance learning caused by quarantine restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the introduction of martial law, which affected the organization of the educational process, has been substantiated.
The practical experience of assessing students' academic achievements in physical education, based on the results of physical fitness testing of students in grades 6–9, has been studied and summarized. Traditional and modernized assessment methodologies have been compared, considering age, gender, and individual characteristics of students, which allows for increasing the objectivity and effectiveness of the educational process.
Improved approaches to assessing physical fitness have been developed and proposed, incorporating the competency-based approach and the latest pedagogical technologies. Further research has been recommended for the systematic improvement of the assessment process, aimed at individualizing learning and maximally considering the physical development features of middle school students. It has been concluded that applying the competency-based approach in the process of forming academic success in physical education lessons promotes students' motivation for regular physical activity and provides conditions for the development of a healthy and socially responsible generation within the framework of the New Ukrainian School.
