Summary. The article analyzes the pedagogical heritage of Hryhoriy Vashchenko, the educational ideal formed in it by this outstanding educator, and the place and significance of physical health and upbringing in the context of the educational ideal. It is emphasized that the entire pedagogical system of H. Vashchenko, the educational ideal in it, were based on two main positions: spirituality (religiousness, Christianity) and national-democratic (actually, Ukrainian) tendencies developed by centuries-old history. It is noted that H. Vashchenko had a thorough knowledge of the history of European pedagogical thought, the pedagogical ideas of many prominent educators (Comenius, Locke, Pestalozzi, Rousseau, Ushynsky, etc.) regarding whom the Ukrainian educator had his own evaluative judgments and shared the meanings of many of them, applying them in his pedagogical theory and practice. In particular, it concerns the significance of physical health and physical education, the attention to which H. Vashchenko realized both indirectly (through his own educational ideal formed by him) and directly (through his idea of physical education). It is noted that one of the forms of indirect realization of the aspect of physical health and physical education in the heritage of H. Vashchenko was the consistently professed principle of conformity to nature.
The research analyzed the nature and meanings of this principle according to the educator, typological parallels with the essence of the principle of natural correspondence according to other prominent educators. The Ukrainian ethnopedagogical, in particular family, experience regarding aspects of physical health and education in it was also analyzed. It was concluded that the pedagogical heritage of H. Vashchenko, in particular regarding the ideas of physical health and physical education in it, remains quite relevant today.
